In 1980, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recognized industry’s need for these standards and guidelines. ISO is an international federation of national standard bodies (or member bodies) from over 100 nations. The organization was founded in 1946 and it is headquartered in Geneva. The federations use technical committees to develop and prepare the international standards adopted by the organization. Each member body interested in a subject that a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. Other internationally known organizations also work in cooperation with ISO through the ISO technical committees.
International standards in their draft form are prepared and accepted by technical committees, and then they are circulated to the member bodies for voting. When a draft is accepted by a majority of the national standard bodies (member bodies), it becomes an international standard. A majority consists of 75% of the member bodies casting a vote.
The first International Quality Management Standard, ISO 9000 Part 1 was prepared by Technical Committee 176, Quality Management and Quality Assurance, Subcommittee SC 2, Quality Systems. The standards were published in 1987 as the ISO 9000 series and updated in 1994. The standards were quickly adopted. These were revised again with the new ISO 9001 in the year 2000, and updated in 2008. Today, they are used by virtually every industrialized and developing nation around the world. The international standards in the ISO 9000 family are intended to provide a generic core of quality systems standards applicable to every business worldwide.
The standard is undergoing revisions again, to stay in step with changing needs of the economy. The new standard is scheduled to be released in 2015.
